What does a garden designer do?
A garden designer develops the overall design of a garden, bringing together its layout, levels, materials, structures and planting. Each project is considered in relation to the architecture of the house, the surrounding landscape and how the garden will be used.
How does the garden design process work?
The process begins with an initial phone consultation and site visit, where we discuss your requirements, ideas and the potential of the garden. Depending on the project, the design can then develop through concept design, detailed design and planting design, taking the scheme from an initial vision through to a design prepared for construction.
What does a garden design package include?
This depends on the scope of the project. A Concept Design includes a concept plan, 3D sketches, and materials and planting mood boards. A Detailed Design Package develops the approved concept into a fully resolved design for pricing and construction, including scaled drawings, planting design, construction and setting-out information, a Scope of Works and documents for contractor tendering
How much does garden design cost?
Garden design fees vary depending on the size, complexity and requirements of the project, as well as the level of design detail and involvement required. The scope of the work is discussed before a quotation is provided.
How long does the garden design process take?
The timescale varies according to the size and complexity of the garden and the level of design required. A full garden design package typically takes around 8–10 weeks, allowing time for each stage of the design process to be developed and refined.
Do I need a topographical survey?
A topographical survey may be required for a Concept Design and is required for a Detailed Design Package. It provides accurate information about the existing garden, including levels, trees and boundaries, allowing the design to be developed with a clear understanding of the site.
Do you provide planting design?
Yes. Planting design is a key part of the overall garden design and can also be provided as a standalone service. Planting plans include detailed plans, plant schedules, a comprehensive plant index and quantities, and tailored maintenance documentation for the first years of establishment. When planting design is commissioned as a standalone service, I can also source the plants on your behalf.
Do you work with architects and landscape contractors?
Yes. I work with private clients, architects and landscape contractors. I can work alongside an existing professional team and provide the drawings and information needed to communicate the design clearly through to construction.
Where do you work?
I am based in Bristol and work across Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire, the Cotswolds and the wider South West. I also consider projects further afield depending on the nature and requirements of the project.
